Rolling Float Meter
Epoch Well Services, Inc. is proud to announce
the introduction of the Rolling Float Meter, a mud flow rate and
velocity sensor. The Rolling Float Meter was initially developed
to enhance the ability to rapidly detect lost circulation zones.
However, due to the extreme accuracy of this device in measuring
the flow rate of drilling fluids, the Rolling Float Meter is now
being used primarily for early warning kick detection (EKD) applications.
By detecting subtle changes in flow rate, rig personnel are given
extra time to prepare for gas entries into the wellbore. The Rolling
Float Meter also detects when the well is flowing during connections
and tripping operations. On a recently completed 20,000' well logged
by Epoch using this sensor, 15 high pressure fractures were penetrated,
and each time the Rolling Float Meter detected the associated gas
influx minutes after the fracture was drilled.

The Rolling Float Meter incorporates two sensors
within one package. The first is a rotary potentiometer that is
six times more sensitive than a standard flow paddle. The second
sensor measures velocity. This portion of the Rolling Float Meter
uses a finned wheel that "rolls" across the surface of the mud at
a rate proportional to the mud flow. The wheel is adjusted just
off the bottom and will detect almost any flowrate within the flowline.
The Rolling Float Meter is available wherever
Epoch DML Mudlogging Services or RIGWATCH Drilling Instrumentation
systems are in use. Please contact an Epoch representative for additional
information on this sensor.
Key Benefits
- Safety
Provides advanced detection of circulation problems such as gas
kicks and loss of circulation.
- Unique
Utilizing two sensors in one package, the RFM senses both the
speed and level of the drilling fluid in the flow line.
- Accuracy
Greater drilling fluid level sensitivity within the flowline.
- Reliability
Grease packed bearings can stand up to the harsh conditions of
drilling fluids for months.
- Precision
The RFM can detect flows as low as 20 gal/min. Excellent tool
for checking flow.
